Guy the Grumpy Gargoyle is a book for younger children-3 to 7 years-although I had the privilege of reading it to a group of eager Year 8's at Cartmel Priory School and they enjoyed it. It was never my intention to write a picture book, but I was invited into a school and asked to work with Early years children. I decided I would write a small story and wrote the first draft in an evening. The pictures took longer and I originally thought they would be used as a guide for the illustrator-however, the editor decided to use my pictures which was nice.
The book has all the hallmarks of traditional stories and when I share the book with infants they join in with actions and noises-the sneeze being particularly popular. There are lots of creative work which can be undertaken using this book as a prompt and I have seen clay gargoyles appear, dens for the gargoyle created and other characters added to the story.
