Guy the Grumpy Gargoyle is a fantasy picture story about friends and feelings that uses the traditions of storytelling to encourage sharing stories! By turns funny and sad, it will appeal to young readers aged 3-7, although I had the privilege of reading it to a group of eager Year 8s at Cartmel Priory School and they enjoyed it.
It was never my intention to write a picture book, but I was invited into a school and asked to work with Early Years children. I decided I would write a small story and wrote the first draft in an evening. The pictures took longer and I originally thought they would be used as a guide for the illustrator. However, the editor decided to use my pictures which was nice.
The book has all the hallmarks of traditional stories and when I share the book with infants they join in with actions and noises - the sneeze being particularly popular. There is lots of creative work which can be undertaken using this book as a prompt and I have seen clay gargoyles appear, dens for the gargoyle created and other characters added to the story.
A new limited edition story about Guy is available now for £7-99. "Guy and the Christmas Gargoyle" is the second Gargoyle story and is available from the author.
